What is a safety recall?
An safety recall occurs when a manufacturer (or the NHTSA) determines that a car model (or several models) has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal safety standard. When this happens, the automaker will alert Hosts to the problem and usually offer a free repair.
As part of an effort to ensure every car shared on Getaround is safe for Guests and in order to comply with legislation in the State of California, Colorado, Nevada, Louisiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan, Virginia, Oklahoma, Arizona, and New York governing personal vehicle sharing, Getaround is requiring all of its Hosts to resolve active recalls in those states before their car can be active for trips on Getaround.
How do I check if my car has a safety recall?
You can check by inputting your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website.
How does Getaround handle safety recalls?
Hosts should reach out to their local dealership directly to schedule an appointment and provide them with the recall and remedy details.
What should I do if I was notified of a safety recall?
Please reach out to your dealership directly to schedule an appointment, making sure to provide them with the recall and remedy details sent to you. If you’re unable to find your car’s recall information, you can look up the details using the NHTSA recall search tool.
Does a safety recall mean that my car is unsafe to drive?
If your car has an active recall, it doesn’t automatically mean it’s unsafe to drive. Please review the details of your recall(s) with your local dealership to determine severity and next steps.
Do I have to pay to have my car’s safety recall(s) fixed?
If your car is on the NHTSA’s car recall list, all recall-related fixes should be completed free of charge. You will need to take your car to an authorized dealer since they contract directly with the manufacturer. And to avoid complications, it’s best to bring your recall letter with you (if you have one).
How long will it take my dealership to remedy my recall(s)?
The time it takes to remedy a recall can vary widely. For example, a software update might take only a few minutes, while major work on the car's fuel system could take a few hours. Your local dealership should be able to help you make an appointment, and provide you with an estimated turn around time for remedy.
What if my car does not have a remedy available for it’s safety recall(s)?
Unfortunately due to California and Colorado law, your car can not be shared on Getaround if there is an active recall for it. We encourage you to follow up with you local dealership to find a solution for your car’s recalls.
What if one or more of my car’s recalls already caused damage to my car?
Federal law does not require automakers to reimburse you for previous damage caused by a defect under recall. The NHTSA does point out however, that most automakers will reimburse for previous repairs related to a recall. Please contact the NHTSA or your local dealership for additional information.
What if my car’s recall does not have a remedy available?
Unfortunately, at this time, due to state law, your car can not be shared on Getaround in the near future. We’ll let you know when your vehicle manufacturer has released a remedy for your recall.
